OVERVIEW OF THE TWO RETREADING METHODS: Retreading is designed to reduce the costs per kilometre, save resources and protect the environment. Truck tyre retreading by certified retreaders is therefore a major factor in total cost of ownership. Depending on the method used – hot retreading or cold (pre-cure) retreading – the driving characteristics of retreaded tyres are restored to almost those of the original tyre. In both these methods, casings undergo identical initial inspections and testing to establish their quality. The next step involves roughening the old tread and carrying out any necessary repairs to the casing. From now on the two processes are fundamentally different: PRE-CURE RETREADING • A pre-vulcanised tread liner (new tread) is applied to the casing with a non-vulcanised bonding gum layer. • The layers are then vulcanised, i.e. the casing, bonding layer and tread are bonded together in an autoclave (pressurised steam chamber) at temperatures between 95 and 110 degrees Celsius. • After quality control, the retreaded tyre is equivalent to a new tyre. HOT RETREADING • In hot retreading, a computer controlled extruder applies non-vulcanised compound to the prepared casing from bead to bead. • The casing is then vulcanised in a heated mould with the desired tread pattern at temperatures of approx. 165 degrees Celsius. • The tyre tread is therefore renewed in the same way as for new tyres. As in cold retreading, the retreaded tyre undergoes extensive in-depth final inspections to confirm the quality. ANATOMY OF A TRUCK & BUS RADIAL Falken Truck and Bus Tyres are made up of various components in differing compositions, depending on the size and type of tyre. Here is a diagram showing the composition of a truck tyre in detail. 1 Modern tyre compounds By minimising heat build-up and reducing rolling resistance, the compound improves fuel efficiency and wear resistance to increase the lifespan of the tyre. 2 Pattern design On- and offroad, long-haul and regional transport: different types of vehicle use need different tread patterns. The tread pattern supports the traction required in each situation. The configuration of sipes and tread edges and the shape of the tread blocks are crucial. One of their main tasks is water displacement, which improves aquaplaning behaviour on straight roads and bends. 3 Sidewall The sidewall transmits power from rim to tread via the bead seat. Sidewall flexibility is responsible for ride comfort, but also for transmission of the steering and driving forces. It is the aspect that determines steering response and driving stability during braking, acceleration and cornering. 4 Steel belts Belt plies vary in number and width depending on the tyre size and model. They ensure the tyre footprint remains uniform. During travel at high speeds, they withstand tyre expansion and the centrifugal forces acting on the tyre. They keep the tyre in the desired shape at all times during travel, and maintain good directional and driving stability. 5 Breaker cushion A breaker cushion is a special compound layer that acts as a barrier, blocking the transfer of heat and motion between the steel belts and the casing. 2 4 6 1 10 7 9 3 5 8 6 Steel casing The casing creates the contour of the tyre. It forms the supporting framework for all the other elements that make up the tyre, as well as maintaining structural stability. The higher the tyre load, the stronger the steel cords used for the casing. The casing shape also ensures the tyre footprint remains uniform in all driving situations. 7 Bead core The bead core holds the tyre on the rim. Its shape and design are developed to prevent the tyre from rotating on the rim and to create a tight seal between tyre and rim. 8 Bead filler The bead filler fills the space created by the uniform, shape-retaining ply end. It mitigates motion stress and significantly enhances steering directness. 9 Rubber bead wrap This rubber wrapping protects the bead compound from abrasion by the sharp wires in the bead core. 10 Inner liner Airtight rubber layer that prevents air from diffusing out. It acts as a protective layer and maintains the required air pressure inside the tyre. 39

The cross-section is calculated as a percentage of the tyre width. Rim diameters, however, are given in inches. To be certain that you choose the right tyre, check the labelling on your current tyres before buying, or consult your vehicle registration certificate (COC papers). Use of tyres with non-approved width or a non-approved tyre/ wheel combination may incur a police fine or make your car fail its periodic roadworthiness test. Snow & ice grip Tyres that are suitable for extreme winter conditions display the three peak mountain snowflake pictogram on the sidewall.
